Abstract
<PICT:0355031/III/1> Tar is distilled by direct contact with hot waste gases, e.g. coal gases, and the resulting gases containing not less than 7 per cent of the tar vapours are passed into a rectifying column and thence through an indirect condenser the condensate from which is passed into direct contact with the vapours flowing through the rectifying column. Tar is led through a pipe 17 into a still 10 provided with a rotating roll 13 which sprays the tar into contact with hot gases from a coke oven 5 collected in a header 12 and led into the still. The vapours and gases pass up through a tower 20 provided with a tar spray 23 and packing 31, 21, and the vapours are partially condensed by passage through an indirect condenser 35 cooled by the tar to be distilled. The reflux condensate drips down the packing 31 and is drawn off through a pipe 39. The gases are further cooled in a condenser 46 to condense light oils which are collected in decanters 48 and storage tanks 50. In a modification the tar passed through the indirect condenser is injected into the tower 30 and the residue collecting at the base of the tower is passed to the still 10.
