Abstract
<PICT:0345654/III/1> Tar is distilled to pitch by heating it in a coiled pipe still 6, flashing it into vapour in a vapour box 9 and simultaneously contacting the vapours, the pitch, and the residual tar with an inert gas introduced through a pipe 10. The vapours pass off through a pipe 12 through a heat exchanger 14 where they are cooled by indirect contact with the tar supplied from a tank 19 through pipes 15, 16, and are condensed in a condenser 21 and collected in receivers 26. The gases produced are separated in a separator 24 and may be used as the inert gases for the reaction by recirculating them through a compresser 28 to the pipe 10. In a modification the inert gases are heated before being passed into the vapour box by heat exchange with the gases of combustion. The pitch is withdrawn through the pipe 13. Specification 158,852, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 231,686, [Class 32, Distilling &c.].
