Abstract

In processes for cracking oils by direct contact with hot carrier gases, e.g. as described in Specification 367,728 the proportion of gum content in the gasoline obtained is reduced by admitting cooled carrier gas to the rectification stage in such proportions that the gasoline in the rectifying zone, if liquid, would vaporize at a temperature at least 100 DEG F. below its atmospheric boiling point while products heavier than the gasoline are condensed and separated. Crude oil from a tank 10 is led into a scrubber 12 and the vapours produced are rectified in a column 14. The condensate <PICT:0446711/III/1> obtained is led through a line 16 to vaporizing, flashing and superheating zones 17, 18, 19 and the vapours produced are cracked in a reaction chamber 20 by contact with hot carrier gases from stoves 22. The products then pass to the scrubber and rectifier 12, 14 where rectification conditions are controlled by introducing the required amount of carrier gas, heated in a heat-exchanger 30 to 500 DEG F., through pipes 32, 33. Gasoline vapours are led off through condensers 35, 36, and scrubber 37 to a separator 39 where the carrier gas is separated and recirculated to the stoves 22 and as required to the exchanger 30. Specification 317,508, [Class 32], also is referred to.
