Abstract

<PICT:0461392/III/1> The process described in the parent Specification is modified to obtain products having a high aromatic content by passing heavy hydrocarbons in the vapour phase through reaction tubes maintained below 800 DEG C., e.g. at 600--700 DEG C., at a space velocity exceeding the equivalent in vapour of three litres of liquid hydrocarbons per litre of reaction space per hour. Gas oil together with recycle stock is preheated in a heat exchanger 5 heated by waste gases from the cracking furnace and vaporized in a vaporizer 6. The vapours are passed through the preheating and cracking sections 2, 3 of the furnace and then cooled by passage through the heat-exchanger 5 and cooler 7. Liquid products are separated in a separator 8 from gases and vapours which are passed to an absorber 10 where the gases are stripped with wash oil preferably similar to the charging stock. The wash oil and the liquid from the separator 8 are mixed and flow through fractionating stills 9, 13, 14 from which gasoline, tar, and recycle stock are recovered. The cracking tubes are constructed as described in the parent Specification.
