Abstract

100,493. Barbet et fils et Cie, E. Sept. 5, 1913, [Convention datej. Hydrocarbons, distilling; column stills.-In the continuous distillation of heavy oils which have been used for washing coke-oven gases &c., the benzols are distilled by indirect heat and the vapours are fractionated, and the residues from which the benzols have been removed are treated with live steam in order to distil the naphthalene. The oils after passing through preheaters A, C, B enter a column D, where the benzols are distilled by means of steam coils arranged on the lower plates E. The oils freed from benzols then flow into a column F, where the naphthalene is distilled by an injection of superheated steam. The napthalene vapours are condensed to a liquid in a condenser C, which serves also as a preheater, and the residues pass to the preheater B, A. The benzol vapours are led to a rectifying- column H surmounted by an ordinary reflux device K, L. Carbon disulphide and like volatile impurities issue from the cooler L by a pipe 18, and benzol fractions (benzene, toluene, xylol, &c.) are collected from the column H by pipes 19, 20, 21, 22. The pipe 22 is provided with branches 23, 24, whereby the heaviest fraction may be returned to the still F or may be led to the pipe conveying liquid naphthalene from the condensers C, instead of being collected separately. The distilling-column D comprises, in addition to the lower plates E fitted with steam coils, a number of ordinary plates with hoods, and a top plate acting as a reservoir. The residual heavy oil issuing from the preheater A is cooled by direct contact with a counter-current of water in a cooler G filled with quartz.
