Condensing processes; pitch.-Three collector mains 3, 4, 5, are provided in coke oven or gas retort plant, valves 6, 7, 8, connecting each uptake 2 with any one of the mains. Ammonia liquor is sprayed into the uptakes through nozzles 18 and into the mains through nozzles 19. Tar condensing in each of the mains flows out to separate decanting tanks for removing ammonia liquor and is then pumped to one of three stills 32 which may also receive tar from condensers through which the gases pass after leaving the collector mains. A number of uptakes 48 open into the stills so that gas from a variable number of ovens can be intro. duced. The gas and oil vapour resulting from the distillation pass out through a pipe 55 to condensers. By collecting the gases from independently regulated early, intermediate or late periods of distillation in the respective mains, tars of low, intermediate or 'high free carbon content are obtained and these are separately distilled to provide the appropriate pitches and oils. Further, by employing the total gases from a selected number of ovens for distilling the respective tars, instead of utilizing gas at the appropriate stage of distillation of the fuel, the carbon content of the resulting pitches may be modified. The pitch obtained from the intermediate carbon tar may be blended with such tar or with tar of high or low carbon content. Specifications 289,378, 303,163 and 303,164 are referred to.
