Abstract

247,585. I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 16, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 247,584, [Class 32, Distilling &c.]. Cyclic hydrocarbons.-The process described in the parent Specification for producing liquid hydrocarbons by the hydrogenation, at high temperatures and a pressure of at least 50 atmospheres, of carbonaceous solids in presence of combined sulphur is applied to the treatment of the products of distillation or extraction of the coal &c., and to the components and distillation residues of the tars. In an example, crude cresylic acid from coal tar and hydrogen at 400-500‹ C, and 150 atmospheres are passed over precipitated cobalt sulphide pressed into lumps, and the gases cooled to condense the liquid hydrocarbons. The cobalt sulphide may be mixed with nickel sulphide, iron sulphide, or manganese sulphide; it may be replaced by zinc sulphide or aluminium sulphide. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the treatment of conversion products of the tars, e.g. coumarone resins, lignite wax. and hydrogenated tars, and the use of ordinary pressure. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
