Abstract

250,948. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. April 15, 1925, [Convention date]. Addition to 247,582. Hydrogenation, destructive. - The process described in the parent Specification for producing liquid hydrocarbons by treating carbonaceous solids in presence of nitrogen compounds with hydrogen or gases containing free or combined hydrogen is applied to the treatment of mineral oils or other bitumens or their components, e.g. crude oil, shale oil, fractions or residues thereof, ozokerite, and mineral pitch. In an example residues of American crude oil are passed continuously with a mixture of 1 volume of nitrogen, 3 volumes of hydrogen, and traces of ammonia over an iron contact mass activated for the synthesis of ammonia, the temperature being 450‹- 500‹ C. and the pressure 200 atmospheres. Or hydrogen alone, with silicon nitride or titanium nitride as catalyst may be used. A proportion of 4 1bs. of gas to 10 lbs. of oil is suitable. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the treatment of conversion products of the bitumens, e.g. cracked oils, acid sludge, and hydrogenated products. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specifica. tion as accepted.
