Abstract

Caking coals, or non-caking coals, mixed with caking carbonaceous materials such as bitumen, asphalt, or pitch are heated rapidly in a finely divided state at substantially atmospheric pressure to temperatures at which the particles are distended by the evolution of volatile substances; the distended particles are then treated with hydrogen under pressure in the absence of a liquid vehicle. The preliminary heating may be carried out in an oxidizing atmosphere. When using mixtures containing non-caking coals, substances such as ammonium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, which evolve gases on heating, may be added.
