Abstract

Class 110(iii) [Also in Group XII] In carbonizing fuels such as lignite, cannel and bituminous coals, shale, wood, and particularly low grade water-containing fuels such as peat, the evolved gases separated from oils and tars are compressed and passed through a succession of interposed heat interchangers and turbines back into the drying and carbonizing zones, heat for the heat interchangers being obtained by burning gas from a producer which may be operated under pressure. Wet peat is fed to a pre-drier 47, part then being briquetted and the rest passing through drying, carbonizing and cooling sections 1, 2, 3, of the plant. Evolved and recycled gases leave the carbonization section by a number of outlets 5, 6, 7, and pass through cooling, carbonizing and cleaning plants 9 to a holder 12 and thence through a compressor 14, turbines 21; 27, with interposed heat-exchangers 16, 17, 23, to the retort, a portion passing direct through .line 29 from the second turbine to the drying section 1. Hot gases for the exchangers are obtained by burning gases from a producer 36 in a combustion chamber 35 supplied with air from a compressor 38 feeding the producer, the gases passing in the reverse direction through the exchangers and then through a turbine 45 to the pre-drier 47.
