Abstract

725,248. Gas producers; oil gas generation. KOPPERS CO., Inc. July 31, 1953 [Oct. 23, 1952], No. 21307/53. Classes 55 (1) and 55 (2). Hot products from a gasifier supplied with finely divided fuel which may comprise high and low grade coals, lignite, heavy oils, pitch and tar, are caused to impinge upon part of the surface of a moving bed of solid fuel so as only partially to penetrate it, the gases being removed from the same surface and solid residues also being withdrawn. A dust gasifier 40 is connected to a carbonizer and secondary gasifier 41 so as to cause the hot products therefrom at, e.g. 3050‹F., to impinge upon part 49 of the surface of a bed 44 of solid fuel supported on a moving grate 53. Gases are withdrawn through an outlet 46 and solid residues which may contain 55 per cent carbon through a feeder 50. Steam, e.g. at 950‹F., is introduced through inlets 45 in the bottom of the gasifier. The coke and volatiles both from the penetrated portion 42 of the bed and from the lower portion which is also carbonized and partly gasified react with undecomposed carbon dioxide and steam. The dust gasifier comprises a conical chamber with fuel dustoxygen suspension nozzles mounted by a venturi shaped annular steam nozzle with cooling water jackets on both sides; the residence time of gases in this zone is 0.1-1.5 secs., operating pressures may range from atmospheric to 50 atm. The gas obtained may comprise 44.0 per cent hydrogen and 46.1 carbon monoxide. The angle at which the hot products impinge upon the moving bed may be varied to alter the degree of penetration and their flow may be with, against, or transverse to the movement of the bed. In one construction a rotary grate is employed.
