Abstract

684,241. Gas-producers. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Oct. 4, 1950 [Oct. 5, 1949], No. 25631/49. Class 55 (i). A combustible gas is produced by the combustion of a solid granular or pulverized fuel, e.g. coal or peat, which is fed to the gas-producing chamber in wet condition and is subjected to a blast which is preheated to a temperature high enough to ensure gasification, i.e., about 900‹C., the blast being preheated in a regenerator which alternately receives heat from the gas produced and gives up heat to the blast. The gas producers 1, 2, which may be of the cyclone type described in Specification 338,108, [Class 55 (ii)], are fed with wet pulverized fuel from a supply 3, have their blast air inlets connected by a duct 4 and are arranged in series with regenerators 5, 6 and dust filters 7, 8. Switching means 9, as described in Specification 684,028, is provided at the lower temperature ends of the regenerators, so that the producers 1, 2 may be used alternately. The air supply to the valve 9 is by a compressor 10 and the gases from the operative producer passes through a turbine 11 which drives the compressor. The exhaust gas from the turbine passes to storage or to further plant for utilizing its remaining pressure, sensible heat and chemical energy, e.g. the exhaust gas may be burnt in a combustion space connected to another turbine driving an alternator, the turbine being connected also to an air compressor which takes in atmospheric air and delivers it to the compressor 10 in which it is boosted.
