Classes 72 and 82(1) A process for treating a molten metal with oxygen comprises providing a hood over the vessel containing the metal, flushing the space above the metal with an inert gas, adding oxygen during the flushing, drawing off the resultant gases, and passing them to a gas washer. As shown, a water cooled hood 3 may be provided over a vessel 1 containing the melt 2, and nitrogen, obtained by the fractionation of liquid air, passed in through pipes 6 to flush the space above the melt. Oxygen, also obtained from liquid air, may be passed in through a lance 7 and the resultant gases extracted through an opening 8, while fluxes or alloying elements may be added through an air-lock 10. The gases are passed to a washer and may then be burned in a furnace.
