Abstract

<PICT:0750518/III/1> Iron ores capable of exothermic combustion and comprising a major proportion of Fe3O4 are pelleted or briquetted and roasted as a stationary charge by heating one surface of the charge to about 1200 DEG C. and thereafter discontinuing the heat supply and drawing regulated quantities of air through the charge thereby causing a heat zone at a temperature of about 1200 DEG C. to proceed through the charge thereby converting the Fe3O4 to Fe2O3 and any sulphur to sulphur dioxide. The exhaust gases may be used for drying and pre-heating new crude pellets or briquettes. Pellets of 10 to 20 mm. size are preferred. A suitable shaft furnace is shown in the Figure wherein 1 indicates the insulated shaft furnace rotatable about a pivot 7 containing a grate 4 to support the iron oxide pellets 3 which are charged through an opening 2. 6 indicates the burner for the initial heating and draught is caused by suction through pipe 5. The initial heating is preferably effected to the top of the stationary charge with downward suction of air but when the layer of pellets or briquettes is about 50 cm. or less heating may be effected at the bottom and air suction at the top.
