Abstract
576,702. Agglomerating iron ores. SMIDTH & CO., Ltd., F. L. May 26, 1944, No. 10282. Convention date, May 28, 1943. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] A method of converting a finely-divided ironbearing material into the form of nodules suitable for treatment in furnaces in which some of the material in a more finely-ground state than the remainder is mixed with carbonaceous material in proportions such that upon heating to between 2200‹ F. and 2300‹ F. the mixture will melt, the mixture is added to a further quantity of the original material to form a charge in which the mixture constitutes 10-50 per cent, or preferably 15-25 per cent, by weight of the remainder of the charge, and the charge is heated to a temperature between 2200‹ F. and 2300‹ F. to cause a preferential reaction to take place within the mixture and to produce molten iron oxides which serve to agglomerate the remainder of the charge into nodules. The agglomerating mixture may be formed by grinding the constituents together, and the heating of the charge may take place in a rotary kiln, the nodules being formed in and discharged as such from the kiln.
