Abstract

Hydrocarbons such as gasoline and kerosene are desulphurized by passing them in the gaseous phase into contact with a mixture of one or more alkali carbonates and catalytically active metallic iron at a temperature of 80-400 DEG C. The temperature of the desulphurizing agent is increased in accordance with the increase in the amount of sulphur absorbed thereby. The process may be effected under pressure. The desulphurizing mixture may also contain an oxide of iron. A suitable desulphurizing agent is prepared by mixing soda ash and iron ore with water to form a paste which is then slowly dried. The mixture is crushed and then subjected to a reduction process with, e.g., hydrogen, carbon monoxide or blue water gas at 210 DEG C. to 225 DEG C. to convert some or all of the oxide to iron.
