507,593. Gas - purifying materials. GROOMBRIDGE, W. H., and PAGE, R. Dec. 17, 1937, No. 34988. [Class 55 (ii)] [Also in Group III] Water-gas and other gas mixtures are freed from sulphur by passage at a temperature of 400-600‹ C., particularly 500-550‹ C., over ferric oxide and zinc oxide ; the mixture may contain 60-80 per cent of ferric oxide and 40-20 per cent of zinc oxide. The treatment may be preceded by washing with alkali to remove as much as possible of the sulphur, and followed by a similar washing to remove the remaining sulphur. The composition may be made by co-precipitation of the oxides followed, after washing, by compression into tablets and drying, e.g. at 80-100‹ C. Examples describe the purification of water-gas and its conversion into a mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the ratio of 1 : 2.
