Abstract

Methyl alcohol.-In the production of methanol from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, the reaction gases are passed first over one or more masses of zinc oxide with or without chromium oxide, and then over one or more methanol catalysts which are sensitive to sulphur poisoning such as catalysts containing copper or manganese or their compounds. The process may be effected in an open system, i.e. not in a closed circuit. In an example, water gas or the like is passed at 50-100 atmospheres pressure through a number of reaction chambers in series, the first chamber or chambers containing zinc oxide, while the later chambers contain, for instance, a mixture of copper and zinc oxides. The reaction gases are treated to remove the methanol produced. If desired, a sufficient number of reaction chambers may be used to cause the conversion of practically all the gas mixture into methanol. Four or five chambers are usually sufficient.
