Hydrogen, catalytic production of. - In the catalytic conversion of Methane hydrocarbons and steam into hydrogen and carbon dioxide the carbon dioxide is separated from the reaction mixture by absorption at such high temperatures that condensation of steam does not occur. The catalytic conversion is preferably conducted in stages after each of which the carbon dioxide formed is removed. A suitable absorbent is cerous oxide which can be regenerated by heating to 350‹ C., but other substances such as lime or magnesia may be used. In an example a mixture of methane with 5 to 7 times the theoretical amount of steam is passed through four chambers, the first and third of which are charged with a nickel catalyst as described in Specification 267,535 while the second and fourth contain cerous oxide. The conversion takes place at 550‹ C.
