Abstract
863,018. Pre-refining molten pig iron. INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE. Oct. 31, 1957 [Nov. 7, 1956], No. 33969/57. Class 72 A method of pre-refining molten pig iron comprises flowing the iron along a conduit and diffusing at least one gas in a finely divided state into the stream of metal, the gas or one of the gases having a refining action. As shown, Fig. 2, a refractory-lined trough has a bottom formed of porous bricks 10 which may be supplied with oxygen by pipes 12 from an oxygen main 17. Porous bricks may be used in the side walls of a trough, Fig 3 (not shown) at the bottom of a syphon, Fig. 5 (not shown) or in the sides of a forehearth, Fig. 6 (not shown). The gas may also be supplied to the top of the flowing metal through porous bricks suspended just below the surface, Fig. 4, or the metal may pass through a tube of porous material surrounded by a gas-tight jacket supplied with the gas, Fig. 7. One of the gases used may be a cooling agent, e.g. carbon dioxide, and solid reagents may be added to the surface of the flowing metal.
