Abstract
Steel or technically pure iron is made from pig iron by blowing oxygen on to the surface of molten pig iron at a rate sufficient to decarbonize and dephosphorize the metal and maintain the phosphorous content below the carbon content, reducing the rate of blowing to decrease the rate of decarburizing but maintain a high rate of dephosphorizing, and then increasing the rate of blowing to complete the decarburization. The alterations in the rate of blowing may be produced by using more or less nozzles, or nozzles of different diameter, or raising or lowering the nozzles, or varying the pressure of the oxygen. The best results are stated to be obtained when the nozzles are 20 to 30 inches above the quiescent surface of the metal. Foaming of the slag may be prevented by directing some nozzles against the slag or by the addition of alkali or alkaline earth metal halides, mine dust, bauxite or sand. Slag forming and cooling agents may be added e.g. lime, iron ore, mill scale, limestone or scrap metal. A further oxidation at a low oxygen rate may also be carried out.
