Abstract

1500511 Cupola melting BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 21 Jan 1975 [21 Jan 1974] 02751/74 Heading C7D Metal is melted by charging it, together with coke, to a shaft furnace where it is supported on a bed of coke to which a combustion-supporting gas is supplied, while at the same time there is injected into the furnace at or above the level of the bed hot combustion gases evolved from one or burners fired with hydrocarbon fuel and oxygen or air enriched to at least 22À5% by volume of oxygen. In preferred embodiments the gas for supporting bed combustion is supplied throughout the duration of melting, while the hot combustion gases are introduced at a level up to 1 metre above the top of the bed.
