Abstract

1,260,631. Blast furnace process. BAILEY INVENTIONS Inc. June 3, 1970 [June 30, 1969], No.26816/70. Heading C7D. Part at least of the coke requirement of a blast furnace is provided by including in the charge coal enclosed in rigid meltable containers having provision for the escape of gases, and a combustion-supporting gas is introduced at the bottom of the upper heating zone of the furnace to burn the gases rising from the reducing zone and the hydrocarbons driven off from the coal as it descends. Preferably the coal is briquetted to conform to the internal volume of the container so that the pressure developed during coking produces a strong coke. The containers may be made from iron or steel, or other metal which alloys with the product, and should have a melting point of about 2800‹C.
