Abstract
608,442. Furnaces. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd. Feb. 23, 1946, No. 5709. Convention date, March 27, 1945. [Class 51(ii)] [Also in Group II] A zinc distilling furnace comprises a vertical shaft and surrounding furnace so arranged that the upper portion is heated to a temperature above the melting point but below the volatilization temperature of zinc and the lower and greater portion to a temperature sufficiently high to volatilise the zinc, the zinc vapour outlet being situated approximate the lower end of the upper part of the shaft. As shown, a shaft 10 into which zinc dross may be fed from the top is contained in a furnace arranged to burn fuel at ports 28 in its lower portion, the waste gases being led out through a flue 31. By control of baffles 34 and 35 a sufficient quantity of gases is passed into the upper part of the furnace through ports 30 to melt the dross without causing volatilization of the zinc. The melted zinc on reaching the lower part of the furnace is led to a condenser 23 by an outlet 18 situated near the junction of the two zones. A louvre 37 may be fitted in the conduit to the condenser to prevent any dross from entering it. Specification 334,059, [Class 89(i)], is referred to.
