Abstract

In a method of pre-heating a catalyst chamber and heat exchanger of a gas purifying system, hot flue gases are circulated from a separate combustion-chamber through the heat exchanger and the catalyst chamber in a circuit which additionally contains means for maintaining the temperature of the flue gases. The method may be effected in apparatus comprising a preheating furnace and means for correcting the furnace to a catalyst chamber and a heat exchanger in a gas purifying system and means for circulating the hot flue gases from the furnace through the catalyst chamber and heat exchanger of the system and back to the furnace. As shown, heat exchangers 10, 11 and catalyst chamber 12 are interconnected such that gas to be purified flows from a mains supply 13 to one side of exchangers 10, 11 and through chamber 12, returning via the other side of <PICT:0937650/III/1> exchangers 10, 11 to outlet 14. Pre-heated gases are supplied by gas fired furnace 17. Valve 22 interposed in pipe 23 connecting outlet 24 of chamber 12 and exchanger 11, and valves 28, 29 are interposed in pipes 25, 27. During pre-heating, valves 15, 16 and 22 are closed and valves 28, 29 and 31 are opened. Furnace 17 is started up and fan 26 is operated. A vent 35 to atmosphere is provided in pipe 27 between the fan inlet and valve 29 so as to maintain substantially atmospheric pressure in the system. In an example, starting temperature is 20 DEG C., flue gas temperature is 400 DEG C. until the catalyst chamber temperature reaches 300 DEG C. and temperature at the outlet 33 reaches 100 DEG C.
