641,154. Gas turbine plant. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Aug. 27, 1948, No. 22708. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XIII] Compressed air for use in a blast furnace 7 is heated in a continuously-operating heat-exchanger 6 by hot gases, at the same pressure, from a high-pressure stage 3 of a gas turbine 3, 4. The gases may be further heated in a combustion chamber 9. The heat-exchanger 6 is of the rotary regenerative type. Turbine 3, 4 drives a two-stage air compressor 1, 2 and a two-stage blastfurnace gas compressor 11, 12. Air from the compressor 1, 2 is burnt with gas from the compressor 11, 12 in a chamber 8 and delivered to turbine stage 3. The stage exhaust is reheated in chamber 9, by being burnt with further blast-furnace gas taken from between the stages 11, 12, passed through the heat-exchanger 6 and led to turbine stage 4. The exhaust from stage 4 passes through a pre-heater 5. Compressed air for the blast furnace is taken from between the compressor stages 1, 2 and led through the pre-heater 5 and the heatexchanger 6. The pressures of the air and the hot gases passing through the heat-exchanger 6 are substantially equal. Excess power is absorbed by a generator 13 which may be used as a starting motor.
