580,677. Gas turbines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. March 16, 1945, No. 6687. Convention date, March 18, 1944. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine plant in which power gas is generated in a combustion chamber fed with air by a turbine-compressor combination working in a closed circuit and is led to a power turbine, which discharges to the atmosphere, the power generated by the power turbine is varied by varying the basic pressure in the closed circuit by means of one or two additional compressors driven by the power turbine. The power gas generator comprises compressors 1, 3, surface heater 8, turbine 10 and heat exchanger 4. Part of the air compressed passes to a burner 14 of the heater 8 and the products of combustion drive a power turbine 16 geared to a ship's propeller 21. This is the plant for low power and make-up air is drawn in at atmospheric pressure through a non-return valve 37. For higher powers, one or both compressors 23, 24 geared to the power turbine are brought in by means of hydraulic or other couplings 25, 26 and these deliver air at, say, four and eight atmospheres to the cooler 12 and the inlet of compressor 1. Valves 34, 35, 36 are provided for the change-over. An electric starting motor 22 is provided which can be used as a generator to take up'excess power. The power turbine may comprise two units each driving one of the compressors 23, 24.
