Abstract

574,916. Gas turbines. STRUB, R. Feb. 18, 1944, No. 3101. [Class 110 (iii)] Starting means for a marine gas turbine plant is characterised by using most, or all, of the power from the useful output turbine 10 or turbines, to drive the compressor or compressors 1, 6, supplying the turbine 4 or turbines which normally drive the compressors. When the speed of the compressors rises, the output of the turbine 4 increases and that of the turbine 10 used for driving the compressor, is reduced. The change-over in drives is secured by disconnecting or connecting couplings 14, 12, which may be of any type. Between the shafts of the turbines 10, 4, a gear 11, which may have a variable speed ratio, can be interposed. In the example illustrated, the compressor 1 passes fluid through a heat-exchanger 2, heated by exhaust gases from the turbine 4, to a branch 20, where some fluid, preferably air, is burnt in a combustion chamber 3. The other part of the air is heated in an exchanger 3<1> and is led to the turbine 4. The air from the combustion chamber 3 passes to the turbine 10, the exhaust of which may be further utilised. The turbine 10 may be by-passed by using valves 15, 16. The compressor 6 supplies make-up air from the atmosphere to the plant through the exchanger 2. A motor 9 is used for the initial starting up of the plant, driving the shafts for turbines 4, 10, at low speed, the coupling 14 being connected and 12 disconnected. To reduce the power absorbed by the compressor 6, valves 7, 8, can be adjusted to allow air at low pressure to be circulated at first. Air is then supplied to the combustion chamber 3 and supplies the turbine 4. The motor 9 is then switched off. The propeller 13, or propellers, may have adjustable blades, to decrease the thrusts during starting up of the plant. During starting, the turbine 10 may drive one compressor only. The plant may operate on a completely closed circuit of the working- fluid, or alternatively a completely open circuit.
