Abstract

396,622. Motor-power plant. AKTIEBOLAGET MILO, 32, Kungsgatan, Stockholm. Jan. 14, 1933, No. 1306. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1932. [Class 110 (iii).] Plant for driving the screw propeller of a ship or aircraft comprises a gas turbine of the double rotation type one shaft of which drives a compressor while the other shaft drives the propeller either direct or through gearing. The gas turbine 10 which is of the radial flow double rotation type has a shaft 12 which is coupled to a shaft 14 on which is the rotor 15 of a gas compressor 16. The second shaft 11 is coupled by a clutch 34 to a shaft 17 on which is mounted the rotor 18 of a second compressor 19. The shafts 11, 12 carry pinions 20, 21 which through other gears are coupled to gear wheels 26, 27 on the shaft 28 of the propeller 29. Overhung on the shaft 14 and connected by a dog clutch 33 is a reversing turbine 32. The system includes a second gas turbine 40 of the radial flow double rotation type, the shafts 41, 42 driving compressors 43, 44. In operation the compressor 16 delivers through a conduit 37 into the compressor 43 which then passes it to the compressor 44 which in turn delivers it to a heat exchanger 47 which receives heat by a passage 48 from the exhaust of the main turbine 10 and the air when so heated passes by a pipe 50 to a combustion chamber 49 into which the fuel is introduced by a nozzle 51. The combustion gas passes to the small turbine 40 and thence on to a second combustion chamber 53 wherein fresh fuel is introduced at 54 and finally goes to the main turbine 10. Beneath the chamber 53 is a branch lead to the reversing turbine. In a modification the whole of this plant is arranged coaxially and enclosed in a casing particularly when used for aircraft. Instead of the compressor shaft being coupled to the propeller shaft it may be free thereof and may act accordingly as an automatic speed control since when the propeller slows on being subject to increased resistance the compressor will speed up and supply a larger quantity of fuel to the turbine to restore the conditions. In a further modification the compressor 16, Fig. 4, may be mounted on a hollow shaft 12a coaxial with the turbine shaft 11 which drives the propeller 29 through the gears 61, and in a further arrangement, Fig. 5, the two parts of the turbine 10 may drive through shafts 11, 12 the compressors 16, 44, and the propellers 29, 29a. Instead of a mechanical gearing between the turbine and the propeller an electric hydraulic or other transmission system may be used.
