638,643. Gas turbine plant. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Aug. 14, 1947, No. 22624. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1946. [Class 110(iii)] In a gas turbine plant of the kind in which the working medium flows round a circuit where it is compressed in at least one circuit compressor and expanded in at least one circuit turbine, from which circuit working medium is extracted and expanded in other turbines, fresh working medium being introduced into the circuit by at least one compressor, at least one independent circuit compressor is driven by at least one independent turbine operated by working medium extracted from the circuit and arranged in series with and before at least one turbine which generates the useful output of the plant. In the plant shown air is compressed in the circuit compressors 1 and 2 with intermediate cooling at 3 and is led through a pipe 4 partly to a heat exchanger 5 and partly to a heat exchanger 6. The preheated air forms one stream at 7 and then divides again at 8. One stream flows through a pipe 9, heat exchanger 10 and pipe 12 to the circuit turbine 13 driving the compressor 1. The circuit turbine exhaust passes back through the heat exchanger 5 and cooler 17 into the compressor 1. The other stream forms combustion air for the fuel burner 21. The hot gases from the combustion chamber 20 pass through the heat exchanger 10 to the independent turbine 29 which drives the independent circuit compressor 2. The exhaust from the turbine 29 is reheated in a chamber 30 and then expanded in the turbine 32 driving the ship's propeller 35. To compensate for the combustion air extracted from the circuit at 8, make-up air is supplied by a compressor 26 and the output of the plant may be controlled by altering the speed of the compressor 26, adjusting its guide vanes or blades or by adjusting a throttling device. The useful output turbine 32 may be in two stages mechanically coupled together with a reheater between them. A further useful output turbine may be provided in the circuit. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 619,114.
