Abstract

623,898. Turbine plant. S U L Z E R FRERES SOC. ANON. May 23, 1947, No. 13889. Convention date, June 22, 1946. [Class 110(iii)] A turbine plant having at least two turbines arranged in series which drive independent loads, is provided with a bye-pass pipe fitted with a regulating valve leading from one turbine to an intermediate stage of the succeeding turbine in the series and an auxiliary turbine fed by the working medium passing through the bye-pass pipe and coupled to the first mentioned turbine to adjust the ratio of the turbine outputs. In the plant shown, air is compressed in the compressors 31, 32, heated in the heat exchangers 36, 37 and then passes to the point 40 where it is divided into two .parts. One part passes through the heat exchanger 52 of the heater 42 to the turbine 44 the exhaust of which returns to the inlet of the compressor 31 through the heat exchanger 36 and cooler 48. The second part is used as combustion air in the combustion chamber 50 of the heater 42. The gases leaving the heater pass through two turbines 54, 55 arranged in series. The exhaust of the turbine 55 passes through the heat exchanger 37. The turbine 54 drives a compressor 63 which supplies air to the circuit to make up for that extracted from the circuit at 40 for combustion air in the heater 42. The turbine 55 supplies the useful output. An intermediate heater 57 is arranged between the two turbines 54, 55. A motor 70 is provided for starting. To regulate the distribution of power between the turbines 54 and 55, a bye-pass pipe 8 having a regulating valve 22 and an auxiliary turbine 24 mounted on the shaft of the turbine 54 are provided. If the valve 22 is opened, the power of the turbine 54 is increased due to the decrease of back pressure and the additional power of the turbine 24 and the power of the turbine 55 decreased by the reduced amount of working fluid passing through the later stages. The bye-pipe 8 also bye-passes the intermediate heater 57. A straight through flow gas turbine plant is also described.
