Abstract
604,156. Gas turbines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28777. Convention date, May 16. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine plant of the type in which a high pressure turbine produces the useful output and a low pressure turbine drives at least one auxiliary machine and means are provided to byepass the high pressure turbine so as to control the output, a part of the working medium byepassing the high pressure turbine is led away from the plant and the remaining part is mixed with slightly heated air before passing to the low pressure turbine. The exhaust from the useful output turbine 19 may pass to an exhaust gas turbine 23 or to a heat exchanger 7 according to the setting of the valves 21, 22. The turbine 23 drives a compressor 31 which supplies make-up air to a circuit containing a compressor 1, a heatexchanger 5, a heater 9 in a combustion chamber 10, a turbine 12 driving the compressor 1 and a cooler 15. Valves 27 and 28 which are operated simultaneously with the valves 21, 22 bring the compressor 31 into or out of operation with the turbine 23. Air bled from the circuit at 6 passes through the heat exchanger 7 and acts as combustion air for the burner 17 in the combustion chamber 10 supplying gas to the turbine 19. The output from the turbine 19 is controlled by adjusting the valves 42, 43 in the inlet pipe 18 to the turbine and the byepass pipe 38 respectively. Part of the working fluid passes to a chamber 41 where it is mixed with air from the compressor 1 before passing to the turbine 23 and the remaining part passes direct to the exhaust pipe 25 through the pipe 39. A valve 45 controls the amount of air taken from the compressor 1 and a valve 44 controls the amount of working fluid passing through the pipe 39. The invention may be applied to any plant in which a turbine for driving one or more auxiliary machines is arranged in series after a useful output turbine.
