Abstract
493,090. Elastic - fluid turbines. TENNANT, W. J. (Aktiebolaget Milo) May 14, 1937, No. 13717. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine plant of the continuous combustion type provided with a plurality of turbines or turbine stages and with a plurality of heating means coupled in series is controlled by one or more controlling de. vices, adapted to operate in the whole range of load and to intervene at all variations of load, provided to control two or more heat supplying means one of which supplies heat to one or more heating means coupled in series before one or more heating means supplied by the other. The high pressure turbine 2, Fig. 1, is supplied with working fluid from the combustion chamber 13 which is supplied with fuel by the pump 8. The exhaust gases from this turbine are reheated before use in the low pressure turbine 3 in the combustion chamber 19 supplied by the fuel pump 9. The pump 8 is controlled by the governor 22, and the pump 9 by a thermostat 24 in the exhaust conduit of turbine 3. The governor 22 may control a byepass valve 26 on the low pressure compressor 5 to vary the air supply to the combustion chamber 13. A non-return valve 11a and a disconnectable coupling 10 allow the low pressure compressor 5 to be uncoupled. A marine gas turbine plant, Fig. 4, shows a series of turbines 49, 50, 51 and 52 supplied with working fluid from combustion chambers 63, 64, 65 and 66 supplied with fuel from pumps 55, 56, 57 and 58 controlled by a lever 68. This lever may also control the output of the compressor turbine 52 by means of valve 70 as well as the low pressure compressor 67 which may be put out of operation by valves 71, 73. The invention is not limited to turbines in series and arrangements in which turbines in parallel supplied by a single heating means in series with another heating means are described. The heating means may be of any type and a gas generator in which fuel is burnt on a stoker is also described. Where there is more than one controlling device they may either work independently or may be interconnected. When a thermostat is used to control the second and succeeding heating means, it may be so adjusted that the inlet or outlet temperatures of the turbines supplied by the heating means are kept constant or controlled in any desired manner.
