Abstract

507,332. Gas turbines. AKTIEBOLAGET MILO. Dec. 13, 1937, No. 34514. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1936. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas turbine, the working medium is reheated-between stages by hot gas passing from the generator to the high-pressure stage inlet. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, air from a compressor 16 is pre-heated by the exhaust gases in a regenerator 9 and passes into a shell 21 surrounding a combustion chamber 20. Fuel, such as coal, is supplied through the valved pipe 22 and air enters from the shell through holes 27. Combustion products pass to the turbine by a pipe 28, 29, 2 and additional air by a pipe 32. Part of the combustion products may pass through a reheater 4 before reaching the pipe 2. The valve 34 in the pipe 29 may be controlled manually or automatically in response to the useful load, the pressure in the pipe 29 or the pressure of the compressed air. The valve 33 in the pipe 32 may be controlled automatically in response to the temperature of the gases in pipe 29. The pipe 32 may surround the pipe 2 so that the admixture of the combustion products and the extra air takes place just prior to admission into the turbine. The flow of combustion products through the heat-exchanger 4 is independently controlled by a thermostat and valve 39, 41, 38 in response to the exhaust temperature or, it may be, the temperature in the low-pressure stage inlet pipe 6. The valve 38 may be mechanically connected to the valve 34. The main control of the plant may be by varying the number of stages in the air-compressor, by throttling the air-compressor or by blowing-off excess of air. For over-loads, combustion products may be introduced at 37 into the pipe 6 being completely burnt there and mixed with the gases coming from the high-pressure stage. A similar plant is shown with three stages and two inter-stage reheaters in parallel responsive, respectively, to the temperatures of the intermediate stage inlet and the final exhaust. These are arranged so that, on diminishing load, the reheater before the lowpressure stage is put out of operation first. A pipe is provided for permitting compressed air to byepass the shell 21.
