Abstract
827,542. Gas turbine plant. GARRETT CORPORATION. Oct. 10, 1956 [Oct. 24, 1955], No. 30861/56. Class 110 (3). A gas turbine power plant comprising a compressor supplying air to a combustion chamber feeding a turbine driving the compressor, a separate power turbine and a heat exchanger having passages for heating the air supplied to the combustion chamber by the compressor turbine exhaust gases, has by-pass means arranged to by-pass one of the passages of the heat exchanger and fluid flow control means upstream of the inlet of the power turbine comprising valve means to control the fluid flow between complete shut-off of the by-pass and complete shut-off of the passage. The compressor 10 supplies air to the combustion chamber 19 through a passage 17 in a heatexchanger 16. The combustion chamber 19 supplies working fluid to a turbine 11 driving the compressor 10 the exhaust of which passes through a passage 23 in the heat exchanger 16 to a separate power output turbine 26. A conduit 30 by-passes the passage 17 in the heat exchanger 16. A second conduit 32 by-passes the passage 23 in the heat exchanger. Valves 31, 33 are provided to divert a part or the whole of the fluid through the conduits 30, 32 or passages 17, 23. The valves 31, 33 may be linked with the control of the fuel valve 34. A variable-area inlet nozzle 40 may be provided to maintain a high turbine inlet temperature under part load conditions. The valves 31, 33 may also be operated by pressure and temperature sensing elements located at the inlet of the turbine 26.
