722,230. Gas-turbine plant. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 12, 1953 [Sept. 5, 1952], No. 22424/52. Class 110 (3). In an open-circuit gas-turbine plant of the kind comprising at least one compressor 2 for supplying air to at least one combustion chamber 4 supplying gaseous working fluid to at least one turbine 1, means are provided for diverting air from the combustion chamber or chambers and converting the energy of the diverted air into useful work, whereby during the use of fuel of a lower calorific value than that for which the turbine or turbines is or are designed, air may be diverted to compensate for the additional mass flow of fuel necessary to achieve the desired nozzle temperature. Thus, the total mass flow through the turbines is prevented from exceeding the design value. Liquid fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber by a pump 5 driven by, say, an electric motor 6. Alternatively, gaseous fuel of a lower calorific value, such as blast furnace gas, is supplied by a compressor 12. The air which must then be diverted to compensate for the additional mass flow of fuel is passed through a control valve 9 to an air turbine 11 which drives the compressor 12. The plant may be modified to permit the selective burning of more than two different fuels.
