Abstract

251,238. Brown, E. April 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Regulating delivery by opening suction valves, and by bye-passes.-In multicylinder oil engines required to operate for long periods at greatly reduced powers, such as marine engines working at low cruising speeds, a greater efficiency during such periods is obtained by regulating the fuel pumps so as to suppress the fuel injections for every other power stroke, or for two out of every three or other ratio of the power strokes successively throughout the whole or a number of the cylinders. or, in the case of double-acting engines, of the combustion chambers. Fig. 13 shows means for controlling the fuel injections produced by a pump comprising a plunger 63 actuated by a cam 60 so as to draw oil through a suction valve 64 and discharge it through a conduit 66 to the injection valve. When injections are to be suppressed, a cam 75 is moved axially, or vertically about the centre 81, into engagement with a plunger 77 so as to hold open the suction valve 64 at every alternate or other number of power strokes. The regulation of the amount of fuel injected is obtained by means of levers 67, 68, 69 which open to a greater or less extent a by-pass valve 71, and the cam 75 may be arranged to act on this by-pass valve instead of upon the suction valve. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes the following subject-matter, which does not appear in the Specification as accepted. A modification of fuel pump is provided with two sets of cams, one cutting out alternate injections, and the other two out of three injections, which are brought into action automatically at the appropriate speeds by a hydraulic relay controlled by a governor driven from the propeller shaft of a ship. The governor may also actuate the lever 69 to control the amount of fuel injected.
