Abstract
327,183. Hemmingsen, T. V. Dec. 31, 1928. Actuating by liquid pressure; two pumps in series; regulating delivery by by-passes and by opening suction valves.-apparatus for supplying internal-combustion engines, with liquid fuel comprises a primary pump 3 drawing from a tank 1 and feeding through pipes 10, 11, 45 a number of feed pumps 25, one for each engine cylinder. The pump 3 has an adjustable relief valve 8 for regulating the pressure in the pipe 10, and adapted when open to permit part of the pump delivery to return to the tank 1. The pump 25 comprises a differential plunger 26, 27, of which the smaller end works in the pump chamber 30 supplied by the pipe 45, while the larger end works in a chamber 38 supplied with fuel by the pipe 11 through a valve 40 and pipe 39. The valve 40 is reciprocated by an eccentric 41 and is rotated by an eccentric 55 through a lever 52 and links 51, 49 engaging the square spindle 47 of the valve. The valve has a peripheral recess 46 which, during the descent of the valve, opens the pipe 11 to the pipe 39 and admits pressure fuel to the chamber 38 to effect the delivery stroke of the plunger 26, 27. During the rotation of the valve a vertical edge of the recess 46 cuts off the pipe 11 and at the same time connects the pipe 39 to a release pipe 44, thereby stopping the delivery of the pump 25 to the engine valve 35. The moment of stopping the delivery and the stroke of the pump may be varied by hand or governor adjustment of an eccentric on which the lever 52 rocks, thus varying the moment of closing the pipe 11 by the vertical edge of the recess 46. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the supply from the pump 3 to the chambers 30, 38 of the pump 25 is controlled by a piston valve 40 which is operated on the downstroke by the engine pressure through a pipe 57, and during this stroke closes the release pipe 44 and the pipe 11<b> supplying the chamber 30, and opens the connection between the pipe 11<a> and the pipe 39 supplying the chamber 38. Delivery by the plunger 27 is stopped when a by-pass pipe 31 controlled by an inclined edge 27a on the plunger opens the end 31a of the pipe. The moment of opening may be varied by turning the plunger by means of an arm 61 connected to the governor &c. In another form, separate slide valves control the admission to the chambers 30, 38, that controlling the admission to the chamber 30 having an inclined edge controlling the supply pipe 11, so that, by angular adjustment of the valve, the amount of fuel admitted to the chamber 30 during the suction stroke of the plunger 27 may be varied.
