Abstract
344,503. Supplying liquid fuel. GUINNESS, K. E. L., 10, Cadogan Square, London. Dec. 5, 1929, No. 37383. [Class 7 (iii).] A nozzle 22 is supplied with a variable quantity of liquid fuel by a piston 16 moved in a chamber 15 by the pressure of the fuel acting on the face remote from the nozzle when a valve 13 is opened by a cam-actuated rocking lever 24 to admit pressure from a fuel supply chamber 11. The return stroke of the piston is effected by a spring 25 which acts on the rocking lever in opposition to the cam. The first movement to the right of the upper end of the lever 24 allows the valve 13 to seat, thus cutting off the pressure in the chamber 15. The entrapped fuel passes freely through perforations 20 and through a disc-type non-return valve 17 which bears against the opposite face of the piston. The piston stroke is determined by an adjustable stop 30 ; in a multi-cylinder engine a number of such stops is adjusted by a rack 32 and pinions 31 to vary simultaneously the quantity of fuel supplied to the nozzles 22. At the end of the delivery stroke the non-return valve is held closed by the shoulder in the chamber 15 which determines the movement of the piston to the left. As the delivery stroke is not dependent on cam actuation the required quantity of fuel is supplied to the nozzle irrespective of crankshaft speed. Means may be provided for varying the timing relation between the cam and crankshaft either by hand or governor. The pressure is maintained in the chamber 11 by a pump.
