Abstract

402,371. Oil engines. KNIGHT & HALE, Ltd., J., and WHITAKER, J. E., Victoria Works, Denton, Lancashire. July 26, 1933, No. 21022. Addition to 352,298. [Class 7 (iii).] A fuel injector, in which a cam-operated hollow plunger in a stationary cylinder forces fuel into a combustion chamber when the fluid pressure of the fuel opens an injection valve centrally disposed in the plunger and seated by a spring located between the plunger and the valve to urge them apart, the fuel being regulated by a valve through which excess is returned to the supply port, as described in the parent Specification, is modified so that the injection valve is seated by a spring disposed at the fluid pressure end of the plunger. A pump cylinder G disposed in a stationary cylinder or casing A guides a plunger B in which is located the rod of an injection valve C. After a cam operated rocker arm M has depressed the plunger B, a spring F raises it to draw fuel through a port a past a non-return valve H to a chamber R surrounding the injector valve C which is held on its seat by a spring E disposed between the pump cylinder G and a collar e on the valve. Depression of the plunger B builds up pressure in the chamber R sufficient to cause the lifting of the valve C, the fuel being then injected into the engine cylinder. The amount of fuel delivered is controlled by a valve K in communication with the chamber R through a non-return valve and opened for a predetermined period, which is adjustable, by a tappet m<2> associated with the rocker arm M. Fuel thus rejected flows through a port p<1> to the inlet passage which also receives through ports f any fuel that has leaked past the plunger B and stem of the valve C.
