Abstract

273,186. Braren, L. K. Jan. 14, 1927. Regulating delivery by varying volume of pump barrel.-The injection of the emulsion of liquid with air or gas, as described in Specification 268,846, into the cylinder of an internalcombustion engine is regulated by controlling the pressure under which the emulsion is kept and also the duration of the injection; the quality of the emulsion may also be regulated. Fig. 1 shows a fuel pump provided with pressure regulation, and comprising a plunger 8 which draws in fuel from the tank and forces the same through passages 15, 17, 18 into a second pump chamber fitted with a plunger 7. At its lower dead-centre, the plunger 7 uncovers passages 46, through which air or gas enters and is compressed on the up-stroke, the fuel from the plunger 8 being injected into this compressed air or gas, and the resulting emulsion being forced through passages 22 - - 25, Fig. 3, into a chamber 2& and the fuel lines 27 to the injection valves. Excess emulsion returns by tubes surrounding the pipes 27, to a chamber 32, Fig. 1, in the pump and thence to the fuel tank, the pressure of the emulsion being regulated by adjustment of a spring 33 acting on a plunger 34 which controls ports 95 through which the emulsion returns to the fuel tank. Adjustment of the spring 33 is obtained by means of a plunger 39 actuated by rack-and-pinion gearing, and this adjustment may be made simultaneously with a similar rack adjustment of a plunger 13 in the pump 8, which varies the amount of fuel injected into the pump 7, and therefore the quality of the emulsion.
