Abstract

9069. Graham, E. A., and Middleton, E. J. April 9. Actuating by pulsating fluid pressure; liquidpiston pumps.-Oil is injected from a nozzle e', Fig. 1, into the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine by a pump, the plunger a of which is raised against the pressure of a spring i by the compression of air in the crank chamber acting on a piston c, the air from the cylinder d issuing at the same time as the fuel from the nozzle. Fig. 5 shows the nozzle 3 arranged near the head of the cylinder, but normally to the air current entering it. The admission of air to the crank chamber and to the cylinder d and its escape from this cylinder to the atmosphere through the port 1<a> are controlled by a rotary valve y which may be adjusted angularly; the port 1<a> may also be adjustable. The stuffing - box of the pump plunger may be packed with mercury communicating with a column which produces a suitable head. The pump plunger and its guide may dip into mercury at the bottom of the pump barrel, the mercury communicating the movement of the plunger to the liquid to be pumped.
