Abstract
8345. Bentall, E. E., and Bingham, G. C. April 9. Actuating by pulsating fluid pressure; diaphragm pumps.-A diaphragm pump, suitable for supplying liquid fuel to internal-combustion engines is operated by liquidpressure pulsations which are produced by a piston of variable stroke. The diaphragm e, Fig. 1, is held in position by the block f; c, d are the inlet and outlet passages. The plunger h is reciprocated by the tappet n and spring m, the tappet n having a variable stroke as shown in Fig. 3. The part q is reciprocated from some moving part of the engine, and is held up by the spring r, the tension of which is adjustable by moving the lever r'. As the part q strikes the stop s, it is thrown downwards to a distance depending on the speed of the engine, thus striking the part p at a variable distance from o. The pump plunger h is supplied with lubricant from the chamber k.
