Abstract

334,322. Brown, W., Hammer, A., Purday, H. F. P., Miller, J., and Rebbeck, F. E. July 10, 1929. Crank - actuated pumps; regulating delivery by opening by - passes a n d suction valves.-In a fuel pump for reversible internalcombustion engines comprising a plunger G which makes two reciprocations for each injection and determines the instant at which injection begins by closing the inlet port M, the end of the injection is controlled by a slide valve K which controls a return passage P between the pump barrel V and the inlet M, and makes one reciprocation while the plunger G makes two, the valve K being operated to open the passage P during the whole of the second stroke of the plunger. The plunger and valve are driven by the engine through a crank &c. F and an abutment S so that they remain stationary during part of the engine cycle or reversal of the engine, before their movements are reversed. In another form, the valve K has a single cutting-off edge and is operated by the rod H through a trip gear. In another form, the valve K is operated successively by two levers, one for opening the passage P during the injection stroke of the plunger, the other for opening it during the waste stroke. In another form, the two levers of the preceding form operate a lift valve controlling the passage P. In another form, the passage P is controlled by the combination of the valve K and a lift valve. Specification 315,168 is referred to.
