347,917. Cooling cylinders. STEYRWERKE AKT.-GES., Steyr, Upper Austria. May 26, 1930, No. 16116. Convention date, July 15, 1929. [Class 7 (ii).] A water-circulating pump 16 mounted on the cylinder head has three passages 9, 10, 12 for the suction and delivery of the pump, and the connection 14 to the radiator respectively. When the engine is cold, a thermally-operated valve 23 closes the connection 14 and opens a byepass 24, so that the radiator is then cut out of the circuit; as the engine heats up, water circulates from the radiator, through a connection 6 and a part 5 of the cylinder jacket, which is partitioned off by ribs 2, to the passage 9 ; the pump then forces the water through the remainder of the cylinder jacket and the head jacket to the passages 12, 14, the valve 23 closing the byepass 24. The pump 16 and the radiator fan 19 are mounted on a common shaft which is driven by a belt 21.
