Abstract

646.201. Cooling cylinders. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I. May 2, 1947. No. 11876. [Class 7(ii)] [Also in Group XIII] In a cooling system in which the cooling fluid passages in the cylinder head 9 have no direct communication with those in the block 8, and the cooling fluid is pumpcirculated to both sets of passages from a single source so that the head is maintained cooler than the block, a thermally-operated valve 6 at the outlet from the block restricts flow therethrough. As shown, a single pump 3 delivers cooling fluid from the radiator 1 by way of branches 4a, 4b to the block and head respectively. In a modification two pumps, having a common axial inlet, are provided to supply the head and block respectively and a byepass from the block outlet returns fluid to the block pump for limited circulation when the valve 6 is closed. A further modification shows series flow first through the head 9 and then through the block 8, a byepass from the connection between the head and block to the radiator inlet being controlled by a second thermally-operated valve to permit limited circulation through the head when the valve 6 is closed.
