Abstract

989,230. Cooling rotary I.C. engines. CURTISS WRIGHT CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1961 [Nov. 14, 1960], No. 40459/61. Heading F1F. An internal combustion engine of the Wankel type has coolant passages 54, 60 in the peripheral walls 20 and end walls 22, 24 of the housing respectively. The coolant, which preferably is also used as a lubricant, enters the housing at 66. Most of the coolant flows along the passage 54 past the spark plug 46 and exhaust port 50 to a manifold 70, but a small proportion flows direct to the outlet 74. At the manifold 70 the flow is split into three branches, one returning past the inlet 48, where it heats the unburnt charge, to the outlet 74 and through passages 76 (see Fig. 4), one to each end wall where the coolant is circulated as shown by the arrows before returning to the outlet 74. The distribution of the flow 13 controlled by restrictions 73 and 78 (Fig. 1) and 80 (Fig. 4). The passages 54, 60 are preferably deeper than they are wide, are located as close to the inner surface of the walls as possible, and their dividing walls taper away from the working chambers to provide more efficient heat transfer. Each of the periphera1 wall 20 and end walls 22, 24 may be made in two parts such as 56, 56 and 62, 64, respectively, the passages then being formed as grooves in the inner parts 58, 64.
