Abstract

558,092. Valves. HINCHCLITFFE, S. Feb. 7, 1940, No. 2379. [Class 7 (vi)] A rotary distributing-valve for supplying fuel from the cylinders of a pump D to the fuel injectors C<SP>1</SP> ... C<SP>4</SP> on the engine cylinders is formed with a control port having an inclined leading edge 10a, so that the timing of the injection may be varied by axial adjustment of the valve. In the form shown, the fuel flows in a closed circuit from the pump cylinders 1 ... 4 to corresponding ports 1, 2, &c., in the casing of the rotary valve, and then through ports 6, 7 in the valve to a space E connected by passages 8, 9 to the return pipes of the pump cylinders, the pressure of the fuel being regulated by a valve in the space E under the control of an adjustable spring F. Adjacent the port 6 is a second port 10 having the inclined edge 10a and communicating with the annular recess 9. The circulation of the fuel in the closed circuit is therefore interrupted as the part of the valve between the ports 6 and 10 passes over the casing ports 1, 2 &c. during which period injection occurs. In a modification a single pump cylinder supplies fuel continuously to a valve port co-operating with a series of ports in the valve casing connected to the ports 1, 2 &c. Two successive injections in each cylinder may be obtained by providing a further valve port between the ports 6 and 10. In another form the port 6 and the valve at E are omitted, injection occurring except when the port 10 passes over the casing ports-1, 2 &c.
