Abstract

582,783. Pumps. KAMMER, G. S. July 12, 1944, No. 13357. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII]- In a combined fuel injector and pump the pressure space 12 communicates in the rest position, as shown with the fuel 1 supply through radial orifices 16, a circumferential groove 14 and inlet ducts 18. The orifices 16 are covered as the plunger 2 descends and the pressure immediately, rises, causing injection of pilot fuel through a hole 32, an extended groove 26, and a hole 39 which is drilled at approximately the same obliquity as the faces 37 and 24 of the valve and'valve seat. At the same time some of the fuel leaks back to the supply through a control orifice 19 and duct 20. When the plunger covers the control port another port 10 is simultaneously uncovered by the lower edge of groove 8 so that leakage through the control port ceases and most of the fuel is delivered to the cylinder through a port 10, a duct 21, 'a groove 36, a duct 35, a groove 34, holes 33, grooves 27 and the remaining holes 39 but some still passes through the. hole 32. Before the plunger reaches the bottom of its stroke one of the ports 16 is uncovered by the helical edge 9 and injection ceases abruptly as there is no pressure available to keep the valve open. The duration of main injection is controlled by the position of the helical edge 9 which can be varied by rotating the plunger by means of rack 6. Specification 556,742 is referred to.
