Abstract

528,042. Fuel injection pumps. KAMMAR, G. S. March 20, 1939, No. 8866. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a fuel-injection arrangement for a single cylinder or multi-cylinder internal-combustion engine comprising a charging pump, a hydraulic fuel accumulator, and a member for hydraulically controlling the injection nozzles, an oblique edged groove 12 is provided on the accumulator plunger 10 to unload the pump 3, by connecting its pressure space 15 to a relief port, at a predetermined pressure in the accumulator space 9. In the form shown, the groove 12 connects the space 15 to the fuel inlet passage 6a by means of passages 13, 14, and the space 15 is connected to the space 9 by means of a spring-loaded non-return valve 7 and a passage 8. The accumulator can be adjusted by rotating the plunger 10 by means of teeth 17 engaging a governor-actuated shaft 16. The space 9 is connected by a passage 18 to the control device (Fig. 2), and by means of a passage 38. Fig 4, and an annular space 37 to each nozzle 41. The control device comprises a piston 24 rotated by a shaft 25 and movable axially by a lever 39. The piston 24 is formed with an aperture or recess (shown in dotted lines) which co-operates with ports 26, 27, 29 in liner 23 of a casing 22 formed with annular spaces 19, 20. There is a set of ports 26, 27, 29 for each cylinder. The space 20 is connected by a passage 21 to the fuel inlet passage 6a, whilst each port 29 is connected by a passage 28 to a space 40 below a spring- loaded flexible diaphragm 31 carrying a needle valve 30. When the aperture in the piston 24 has passed beyond one of the ports 26 the fuel supply to such port is cut off, and when it passes under the corresponding port 27 the space 40 is relieved and the valve 30 is pressed suddenly upon its seat. Specification 524,098 is referred to.
